Thandi Baloyi is a 23-year-old multidisciplinary artist from Gauteng, South Africa. She holds a Diploma in Fine and Applied Arts from Tshwane University of Technology. Her painting and sculpting practice uses exaggerated figures with enlarged heads and smaller bodies to explore trauma, liberation and the female gaze. As a Tsonga woman raised in a Pedi household, Baloyi incorporates Tsonga prints and collage into her work to connect personal narrative to ancestry and lineage. A survivor of sexual violence, she positions her body as both a subject and a site of transformation, interrogating the commodification of women’s bodies. Through her work, she seeks to imagine new possibilities for Black womanhood and reclaim autonomy.
