Historical artifacts are not benign reminders of a neutral past. Rather, they evoke a time or place that can continue to hurt or heal in the present and future. In honour of Africa Day, for our first Talking Back to Objects, curator and healer Dr. Motsane Seabela will guide us to say our piece to an original bill of sale of a young enslaved man bought and sold at the Cape of Good Hope. This will be followed by an optional Afroflow healing dance session with Muzi Shili.

Dr. Motsane Seabela is the Curator of Anthropology at Ditsong National Museum of Cultural History (DNMCH), responsible for the caring of just over 25 000 objects mainly from Africa, Oceania and Asia. Seabela researches the muted narratives pertaining to black people in museums as well as themes of restitution(particularly epistemic restitution) of African ‘objects’ within and outside the African continent.
